Up And Coming: Travel Plans 2017

I have to start off with a bit of an apology for the title of this blog. “Travel plans 2017” may be a tiny bit misleading, because, the beginning of the 2017 is upon us and in true spirit I have not got a single bit of travel organised. Anyone who knows me will roll their eyes and think, ‘how typical,’ as this haphazard approach is generally how I roll when it comes to travel.

All I know is that I want to keep travelling in 2017. I figured it was a good time to sit back, build the wish list and start getting mega motivated.

Up And Coming

The biggest shift this year will begin at the end of February when my working holiday visa for Australia expires. After a full two years travelling the length and breadth of this magnificent country it’s going to be a rather emotional farewell. To soften the blow, I’ve decided it’s necessary to try to squeeze in some travelling on the way back to the UK. Flying from Perth in Western Australia is the perfect starting point for such an adventure as places such as Bali, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are on the doorstep.

Travel Plans 2017

I’ve spent a couple of weeks in Bali where I relaxed at a yoga retreat, explored rice paddies of Ubud and the temple at Ulu Watu. I’ve also spent a few days partying at the ubiquitous Gili Trawangan. This time around, places such as Java and Lombok have captured my attention for a bit more low-key, less-touristy experience. I am inspired to try a hike up Mount Rinjani on Lombok – depending on how fit I’m feeling!

If you’ve ever met me you’ll know I’m a huge softie for animals. I’ve always been intrigued by orangutans and I am drawn to the idea of Borneo. Here I would like to visit an orangutan sanctuary and possibly try to spot some in the wild.

There is also an incredible diversity to Malaysia that really appeals; from the tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands, the famous Petronas Buildings of Kuala Lumpur to colonial history, cuisine and hiking that can be done in places such as Mount Kinabalu.

The Philippines

There is so much to consider when researching a trip to the Philippines! It’s best known for its island hopping, white beaches and pristine waters. I’m quite taken with the idea of relaxing in a little stretch of paradise, but keen to do this in a budget friendly way. I’m going to investigate where is best for the solo female traveller rather than get caught up in the honeymooners. There is plenty of jungle to explore and also the scuba diving here is supposed to be world class.

I’m from England so it may seem a little strange to be including my own home country as a travel destination for 2017. But the way I see it, there is still tons more to see in my country of birth. I’ve definitely been inspired by the recent TV adaptation of Poldark to stomp enigmatically around the scenic windswept coastline of Cornwall. I can picture me watching the surfers in Newquay and exploring the gardens at The Eden Project.

Costa Rica

Sloths. Need I say more? Perhaps a little more of a wild card in terms of whether or not I’ll actually be able to achieve this, Costa Rica has been steadily working its way up my list of places to visit with every online video I glimpse of a sloth doing something cute. I’ve been a huge sloth fanatic for years; something about their faces, their ungainly movements and intense slowness just appeals to me. The more I see about sloth sanctuaries in Costa Rica the more I am sure that I need to be there for my spirit animals.

All of these destinations need a lot more research – send me your hints and tips! – and a good deal of planning.

I reckon that if I can end the year snuggling with a sloth baby then I will be ending 2017 on an all-time high.

Can we say life goals, anyone?

Watch This Space

Whether or not I make it to any or all of the destinations listed above remains to be seen. Watch this space to see how my 2017 travel plans develop! Right now I have a whole heap of inspiration and am super keen to put a few trips into place.

Have you been to any of the places above? Do you have any recommendations or hints and tips for me? Let me know what you think in the comments or leave me a message.

Happy and safe travels to you all in 2017!

Thank you, Katie! I will certainly love to pick your brains and get in touch with your friend. But my preference would be to reunite in Costa Rica, of course! All the best for 2017 and I hope our paths can cross.
